For a profession committed to comforting people by bringing them together, serving as the “funeral police” for two years of mask mandates, gathering restrictions, and social distancing has been a struggle — particularly when we have our own health and safety to consider. On May 17th, Funeral Professional Peer Support (FPPS) and the Cremation Association of North America (CANA) open the monthly peer support meeting with a discussion of health, safety, and service considerations. Paul Harris and his team travel the country instructing deathcare teams on health, safety, and compliance. As President of Regulatory Support Services, he’s listened to every concern about workplace safety firsthand. He’s familiar with the way the stresses of operating as COVID emerged and surged placed funeral professionals worldwide on a tightrope between managing families’ expectations and keeping the workforce safe. During the May meeting, Paul will guide participants as they address the fears and frustrations of working in a career that exposes us all to shifting safety realities everyday—during removals, in the preproom, at the gravesite—and everywhere in-between. This peer support meeting is about managing the stress of being prepared for whatever you might encounter with the desire to serve your families well. Finding balance between the need to protect employees, comply with regulations, and serve families is something we can all relate to.
