HEALTH FOR THE HOLIDAYS: SELF-CARE WEBINAR FOR FUNERAL PROFESSIONALS

WHEELING, IL—With shorter days, family obligations, and a job that doesn't recognize the change in seasons, the holidays can be the biggest strain on our profession. Combine that with a global pandemic and a surge in cases and taking care of yourself and your colleagues is more important than ever.

Canadian Funeral Peer Support and Cremation Association of North America (CANA) are coming together to help you gather the tools you need to keep working with a free webinar on Wednesday, December 16 at 1pm CT. Our expert presenters will share strategies to address the challenges you’ll face on the front lines during the winter months.

CANA’s President W. Scott Smith will talk about his experience in Texas, the state with the highest COVID-19 case count in the country. Scott is the CEO/President of All Texas Cremation, but also serves as chair of the Texas Disaster Response Team of the Texas Funeral Directors Association. He responded to the West, TX plant explosion and the Oklahoma City bombing and handled the cremation of the first Ebola death in the United States. Scott is involved in every aspect of the funeral industry and will share helpful insights from his time leading professionals and volunteers during emergencies, as well as discussing how he maximizes his precious downtime away from the front lines.

Dr. R. Nicholas Carleton joins our panel as an expert on mental health on the front lines. Dr. Carleton has made it his life’s work to understand human response to trauma and the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Alongside colleagues at the University of Regina, across Canada, and around the world, Dr. Carleton helps to improve the mental health and resiliency of the Public Safety Personnel (PSP) who work every day to help people in distress. His presentation will highlight strategies to identify problematic symptoms, suggest coping skills to help, and provide recommendations for engaging professional supports when needed.

Join these experts—and your colleagues across North America—to talk about self-care, wellness, and mental health for funeral service professionals of all levels in their career. Attending the live webinar provides of 1.0 Continuing Education hour approved by the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice (APFSP) and many provinces, check with your state or provincial licensing board for details.
